Ating Dibdibin - The National Breast Cancer Screening Program

May 31, 2008

Being a breast cancer survivor myself, I find it necessary to copy and clip this  latest news update from ICanServe Information Network. Early detection truly makes a big difference. Thus, this upcoming Program Launching where I will come to volunteer.

ICanServe partners with Marikina City through Mayor Marides Fernando for its flagship program,”Ating Dibdibin,  the first community based  breast cancer screening program in the country.

Ating Dibdibin” will be launched on June 6. A Memorandum of Agreement will be signed between  Marikina city Mayor Marides Fernando and  the ICanServe Foundation  represented by its Founding President Kara Magsanoc-Alikpala.

This is a very vital program for a country with the highest incidence of breast cancer in Southeast Asia.

Lea Salonga, multiawarded singer and actress leads the information campaign designed and produced by volunteers of the Jimenez Basic ad agency.

To prepare for the program, ICanServe  with the help of Dr. Corazon Ngelangel, oncologist, cancer screening advocate, trained the medical staff, barangay and family health workers on early breast cancer detection techniques so they can teach the female residents of Marikina . During training,  each participant  also received free breast clinical exam.

Dr. Karen de la Cruz, organizational psychologist, former volunteer for the Philippine Cancer Society, honed the skills of breast cancer survivors including ICanServe members on public speaking and empathy.

Catering to women ages 20 to 75, the program aims to reach about 54,000  through barangay assemblies and various gatherings like schools, private hospitals, socio civic organizations, homeowner associations and the like.

“Ating Dibdibin” aims to fight ignorance and the fear women have of cancer and to make breast self exam a lifetime habit.  It ultimately wants women to take charge of their health.  Hopefully at the end of many years, breast cancer will be caught in its earlier stages.

Both Marikina and ICanServe will commit to help source funds for women who will test positive for breast cancer.

ICanServe is a program under the auspices of the American Cancer Society made possible by a grant from Pfizer Foundation USA and Pfizer Philippines.

Volunteers and sponsors are more than welcome to help the program.  Cities all over the country are invited to partner with ICanServe.

Daddy’s Corner Tag

Now, it’s  a tag about the father of our children. Thanks Race for this tag.

I want to mention so many things about the father of my kids, but I am now very sleepy.  I would just thank him for being a great father, a very responsible one, and very patient.  He even wakes up at midnight at the depth of his sleep only to drive her daughter to her work at call center. He is serious yet a joker and funny daddy at times ( just what is shown in their picture below)..

Thank you for everything you’ve done for us, your family.

We love you!

I want to see Bangkok

May 28, 2008

My big sister, Tatie and I have long been planning to go on a Bangkok Tour together with her only daughter, Mae.  But the plan  had many times been set aside due to some celebrations that transpired within the scheduled time.  Recently, she called and asked me to get booking for May 30 – June 2 schedule. That’s before the school opens the following week. Booking is almost done when I decided to check on the weather forecast for Asia especially Bangkok. Unluckily, it turned out there would be heavy rainfalls and thunderstorms on those days on that place of interest.  Disappointedly,  another postponement for the booking.  I just wish the weather will be fine soon and nothiing  more will impede chosen schedules if ever.

Actually, my dream is to travel to Bangkok with Hubby.  However, for whatever reason, he doesn’t want to go.  It somehow upsets me that he is not interested to come with me. Oh well. . .

Anyways, I’m gonna be there one of these days.  Doesn’t matter who  I’ll be  with.  Nonetheless, I’m pretty sure it will be a great bonding time with Ate and Mae,  if this pushes  through.  God willing, it will be soon.

Buddhism plays a dominant role in Thai culture

                                                                     See yah soon, Bangkok!

A Day of Treats

May 27, 2008

We were supppose to treat my mom-in-law to a whole day affair of walking around town eating out and whatever it is she chooses to do last Saturday. We brought her to Mega Mall this time and had lunch in one of our favorite restaurants, Mann Hann. We wanted her to choose what to order but she refused. Knowing what she likes, I just did the ordering.  See what they were.

I was thinking it is a treat for Mamang. But it turned out the other way around. Mamang footed the bill.  So lunch treat was for us and not for her. Oh-oh! Anyways, there’s still three months to go before she leaves for Sydney. (Her permanent residence.  She’s staying with my youngest sis-in-law.)There’s still time for us to return the treat.

We passed by an appliances store across Mann Hann, i thought to window shop. Surprisingly, Mamang asked us (together with Elvie) to choose which Microwave Oven we want. ( My previous microwave was a 110volts that had been plugged in to 220volts, thus the total wreckage) And came another treat,  a new Microwave Oven. We can’t stop her generosity, what can I do but accept and be thankful!

We were done with our malling,  but only after getting 2 boxes of yummy brownies. The other box was sentenced in the car.  These were  really nice brownies!

We went next to Tiendesitas for Tom’s car show visit, then to a relatives place, after which we proceeded to MOA to watch the Pyrolympics. But there’s  too much traffic jam and no place to park. We didn’t want to pay P150.00 for each of us either so we detoured to Folk Arts Theater grounds.  I took some pictures while waiting  and here’s one of them:

                                                                     The Jumbo Floating Restaurant.

Then the rain fell. We decided to call it a day. It was a beautiful day despite the rain, despite the aborted pyro show watching. I wonder if the said show pushed through.

But wait, the day was not over yet.  We had to stop at Bacolod Chicken  on our way home for our dinner. Here’s what we had.

Now, we can truly declare the day was over and done.  Thanks Mamang for all these!

With nothing to do . . .

May 22, 2008

This is one  moment of my everyday  life when everything around me  seem  lifeless.   It  is only me and my lappy that ’s enjoying each others company  or do you, my lappy?  answer me!  (now that’s me getting a bit crazy.)   So I  explore  her, tinker with her keys and voila!  I have just discovered her web cam producing pictures!  See?!  I can discover computer techys on my own from zero  computer comprehension to at least a good novice me.  See  what I have produced.  A picture of weird, silly individual smiling all alone on her lappy web cam.

    II

Now, you have to bear with me.  This is only a result of idleness.  I’l try not to do it again.  Quite difficult to be *praning” eh!

Matthew Nilson, Jr. is Gone

May 20, 2008

We are shocked by the sad news that Matthew Nilson has passed away. He is the only son of Dr. Matt Nilson Sr.,( my niece Raquel’s husband.) and  the only sibling to Monica.. . I have met this young man sixteen years ago at Matt and Raquel’s wedding here in the Philippines. This very good looking guy can be well mistaken for Tom Cruise. We are really saddened by his demise. He just turned 40 last Nov. 20.

Matt must have been devastated by this heartbreaking incident.

 Our Heartfelt Condolences!

About That Insulting Letter to Filipinos

I have read a post of a fellow blogger which showed a supposed hate letter from a certain Art Bell.  I almost grabbed and posted that letter extremely insulting Filipinos to no end but not until I became curious who this Art Bell is. After searching the wikipedia,  and after thorough reading, I learned that that letter was done to ruin the said man.(or is it, really?) I could hardly believe he really wrote it, because he is married to Filipinas twice, meaning he truly loves Pinays. The Philippine Daily Inquirer printed an email of the said letter but later retracted the printing after an investigation of the hoax. So what happens now is the periodical resurfacing of the said  hoax ”Hate Letter- an insult to Filipinos.  I opt not to grab and post it.  It would just affect us Filipinos unnecessarily. As it has initially affected me when I first read it. I can’t accept what that letter says of us Pinoys. But I’d rather let my Filipino heart stay calm and peaceful.

Celebrating Jon’s Birthday

May 19, 2008
Jon is my nephew, being the son of my deceased eldest and only brother.  He celebrated his 28th birthday, last Saturday, May 17th.  I was very glad that he spent his birthday with us, his family circle. They were all here in our place for his birthday celebration  The original plan was to go to my only sister’s place in Bataan to have fun in a beach in Bagac, Bataan, The plan didn’t push through due to typhoon Cosme.  So even without my sister and her family, we still celebrated  here in the house. I have cooked beef mechado and daing na bangus for our breakfast., bulalo, some prawns, broiled deboned bangus for our lunch. (still waiting for the photos from tom’s cam.) Afterwards we went to a resort near our place for the resumption of the aborted swimming activity of the kids. Everybody enjoyed the day in the resort.including Kalvin, Jon’s little boy.  We all went back home to our place to resume the fun.

Jon, with wife Kim and cute son, Kalvin

Jon and his sis dropped by at a pizza parlor and brought home the biggest size pizza, fried chicken, calamares and many other finger foods. Despite typhoon Cosme’s  participation  in Jon’s birthday, everybody had much fun and certainly had pleasant bonding moment with the  clan. They left the house late that evening. It was a great day indeed , that Roger Jon’s day!

Postcard from Greece

May 14, 2008

My niece Raquel is currently in , Sweden with her husband, Matt, after they have toured Greece, Denmark and other European countries.  They’ve gone cruising too, to the different islands of Greece. See their European escapades
here.

This morning, the postman handed me this postcard from Athens, Greece. Am just too happy to know that they remember me even when they are in a very fabulous place. She must have remembered that I value those postcards they sent me from all their trips to almost everywhere around the world.  I can’t help dreaming about those wonderful places they have been.  That’s all I can do for now, dream!  Hah, who knows, one of these days, we can go there too.  Well, to dream is free but I got to wake up to reality.

Thanks, Matt and Jay for this postcard!  How about sending us those sweet shrimps and big fish caught from the lake instead. (Lol)

Trying Out SCTexpressway

May 12, 2008

We left Talavera at around 8:30 a.m. yesterday, still in convoy with my sister and her daughter. Along the way home, we decided to pass by Subic Freeport. We want to experience the newly opened expressway that is the SCTex.  Tom, my hubby, felt like exploring  the expressway from end to end so we trekked the long road from Talavera, Nueva Ecija to Tarlac City to get to start at the end point.

However, we were disappointed to find out that the said point of entry is not opened yet for public. We haven’t had any choice but to drive to Nlex.  There were lots of shifts and turns that made us lose convoy with my sister’s car. Luckily, we have managed to get through SCTex via Dau interchange but still losing my sister’s car behind.  Until she called us up and ask to wait for her at the Tipo Interchange in Subic.  The long and tiresome journey lead us to Teriyaki Boy Restaurant as soon as we arrived Subic Freefort.  We had a sumptuos japanese chow.  ‘Twas a real great meal for me for  I love Japanese foods so much, (but only next to Chinese food,).  Furthermore, my sis paid for the bill that made it more enjoyable (Lol).  After we have filled up our tummies, the shopping rounds followed.  I picked another tent for I can’t resist the very low price of it. Only a thousand pesos against the 3,500 pesos of our first tent.  There were also Havaianas Flip Plops that caught my attention. Priced less than half of what I was wearing, I almost picked a pair or two, but not until after a thorough inspection and comparison.  I found out they were fakes. I thought I found another bargain. Obviously, they were not. Shop, shop and shop we went ‘til my  leg muscles ached. Nevertheless, we enjoyed Subic once again. We parted ways with my sister and her daughter, Trisha Mae at the Dinalupihan Exit of SCTex, the other end of the expressway. We were able to trekked the full available stretch of it.

It is one magnificent highway to traverse if only we can ignore the high-priced toll card and only if they have installed comfort rooms along the very long stretch of it.  Nevertheless, we went home happy and satisfied though very tired and sleepy.

Paying Last Respect to Kuya Rene

We had to go to our relatives’ place in Talavera, Nueva Ecija last Saturday.  My Cousins husband, Kuya Rene passed away and we gave our last respect. We met with my sister Tatie in Mc Do Cabanatuan and went convoy to the place. We only got to see Kuya Rene and the other relatives usually on our Clan Reunions. This time the clan was whole once again, devoid of the usual cheers and joys, but packed with sadness instead.  He left behind  his wife, (that’s my Ateng Reming) and three daughters. Carol, Ruby and Dorie. We stayed overnight for the funeral vigil and left for Manila Sunday morning.

Light in the box

Being a stay-at-home wife and a mother who is in charge of all the household requirements, I sometimes find myself in a situation where finances are at its lowest if not totally zero balance. Prices of household commodities keep on increasing to no end. But there is no way we are going stop buying those stuff. Important as they are to us, we basically need them.  That makes me contemplate on putting up a business so as to gain some additional resources to augment my husband’s fixed income. I have ventured in some of buy-and-sells before but it didn’t progress because it required a lot of my time outside the home which is not much of my desires.

Just very recently, I have heard of this e-commerce from my niece.  She has been into this business for quite a while now.  She created her own website for her on-line business which deals on ladies bags, accessories, toys and other stuff.  She’s doing very well as she keeps on shipping items after items to various states of the U.S. and other countries as well.  My niece encourages me to follow what she’s been doing and suggests that I try the   New Version of Lightinthebox, com.  It is a leading worldwide wholesaler and it has more than a hundred thousand merchandises to choose from.  They offer a very irresistible wholesale price but require no minimum order. What a good deal!

For the plans I have now, I am pretty sure it will get my husbands approval.

Help!

May 8, 2008

Loads of errands are already overflowing on my hands. I’ve started working on them and have done a few but every time I got near my laptop, I couldn’t resist hitting the keyboard and completely forgetting the current task I was attending to.  I don’t have any “house angel” at the meantime though I keep on looking for one.  Chores keep on coming but I am always magnetized by my laptop. Yesterday, I was about to fix the piles of clothes for ironing when my close buddy, Lyn, called me up.” Let’s meet at the bowling center if you are free.”  “Oh yes, I’m free!” was my quick response.  Hey, i said whatttt? I’m free?!!!

( I took this picture of Lyn before, while she was driving for an "all girls" gimmick.)

Well, I just couldn’t refuse Lyn’s invitation to go out. We lost communication for a while since her hubby was hospitalized for weeks. So for me, ‘twas like getting on the road again with her.  Lyn is also a stay at home wife without an “angel” and mother to three legal aged children. Almost always, we have the same level of frequency when it comes to motherhood and all, that every time we go a little ”crazy” at home, we are one on escaping out into our more relaxed moment which is bowling.  I didn’t bowl though yesterday. I just watched her play. The next is our usual getaway acts, shopping and eating our fave dimsums and noodles in that particular Chinese restaurant.

Another day has wrapped up and two mothers’ minds chilled out.  Kinda cool day!

Cooking Some More

May 6, 2008

I went to the grocery the other day and I found my favorite fresh prawns so irresistible to buy.  They were kinda costly but I really love “sugpo” so I just closed my eyes to the price and bought some. My "Bosses" don’t crave for it as much as I do but they like it just the same when it is there served on the table.

Initally, I couldn’t make up my mind what to cook with it.

I realized I didn’t have the available ingredients for Sinigang na Sugpo so I ended up with what is available in the kitchen.  What I have were olive oil, garlic, freshly ground black pepper, chilli powder, soy sauce, sugar,  worcestershire sauce and hoisin sauce.   Then the final product is this.

Sweet and Spicy Prawns with Hoisin Sauce ala Beng . (lol)

Also, the one food (or fruit, to be exact) I’ve long been craving for since summer began, is this super red watermelon.  So refreshing when icy cold.   These are some of the little wonderful treats of life for me. Yeah, so you know now how shallow my happiness is, hah?!
